I’m not really sure why people would purposely spend time and money to get their cars to handle poorly, but to each their own.

Meh, there’s a lot of tryhards in that group as well as a lot of genuinely excellent folk, but most “drift cars” are rolling dumpster fires.

Love-Hate. Drifiting doesn’t appeal to me personally, and I has a sads sometimes when people cut up a perfectly *good* car to make a drift missile.

But on the flip side I’m all about stupid car mods and appreciate some of the crazy shit they do in the name of going the most sidewayz and making lots of tiresmoke.

I think they are a bit of an abomination but I mean its really cool to see Formula Drift in person. The smell of tire smoke is just relentless and they put down a shit ton of power even though I don’t really know why. It always seems like everything they do to set up the cars is just wrong but somehow its still awesome. It seems like the whole activity is a big “fuck you” to normal racing so to me its great fun. The culture surrounding it is toxic but the cars at the professional level are just awesome. Only problem I really have with drifting is the drift tax for Nissan 240s

Well people make drag cars and there is a HUGE culture surrounding that. I can honestly understand and appreciate drifting way more than drag racing. At least the steering wheel is required and the front tires serve a purpose.

High-powered manual smoke machine made on a budget by driving enthusiasts?

Is there something not to like here?

Even if you don’t like JDM, you can find amazing American drift car:

Like I said, to each their own. I like that drag racers are trying to make their cars faster instead of score points for aesthetics, but again that’s me. What other people find enjoyable is just as valid.

It's not my jam, but it requires a lot of skill and knowledge of vehicle dynamics. I'm all for that. They put on a good show too. Lots of racing should take notice on that point.

Oh yeah, I do not get the aesthetics part of it or even the competition aspect at all actually. I just think it looks like a ton of fun to drive like that and it clearly takes skill to not drive into the wall. The part of drag racing I do enjoy is the building and tinkering part of it to edge out some extra tenths or hundredths of a second. That actual driving part is the disappointing thing. It just seems like a drag car is more about the build than the driver skill.

Personally I’m fine with it. But I’m not exactly sure how the televised events have changed (I haven’t been able to watch many events due to mandatory adult crap) but it would help to explain some of the stuff in drifting. Even pointing out something simple like the cars suspension and setup behaviors would help.

NASCAR may be kind of 2 dimensional, but they at least explain the heck out of stuff so you at least know what you’re looking at.
